IS FORT CAMPBELL? Kentucky or Tennessee?
There is a lot of
confusion on exactly where Fort Campbell is located.
Welcome to Fort
Campbell, Home of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). Fort Campbell lies
on the Kentucky- Tennessee border between the towns of Hopkinsville, KY and
Clarksville, TN, and is about 60 miles northwest of Nashville on I-24. Although nearly two-thirds of the 105,000
acres of post are actually in Tennessee, the post office is located in
Kentucky, and the identification lies with that state.
Fort Campbell supports
the 3rd largest military population in the Army and the 7th largest in the
Department of Defense. Active duty officers-1,884; active duty enlisted-
20,511; family members-40,491; retirees-112,629; civilian employees-3,921; Army
Reserve & National Guard- 18,166. At
164 square miles (105,068 Acres), the installation is one of the largest in the
Fort Campbell is a city within itself. There are more than 4,100 homes on the
installation, providing housing for officers, enlisted soldiers, and their
families. Fort Campbell has a large post exchange-commissary complex to
facilitate shopping, seven dependent schools on-post, recreation accommodations
for all seasons, and a new modern hospital for 24-hour medical service, child
care facilities, numerous chapels, banks, restaurants, post exchanges, service
stations, campgrounds, five swimming pools, and most other facilities a
civilian city of that size would have.
The Fort itself was
opened in 1942 and was named after William B. Campbell, a Tennessee statesman
and Brigadier General of the United States Volunteers during the Civil War.
Airborne Screaming Eagles stationed at Fort Campbell are members of the only
air assault division in the world, hence the designation 101st Airborne
Division (Air Assault). The designation
indicates that the helicopter is the primary means of transportation for the
division. Gone are the days of the
helicopter as a taxi; tactics, logistics, and training are now all based upon
the helicopter and soldiers forming a coordinated combat team. We're very proud of our role in the vanguard
of this field.

Some confusion comes
from the fact that Fort Campbell claims to be in Kentucky, but most of the Post
is located in Tennessee. Even though 2/3
of the base is in Tennessee, it has its post office over the Kentucky state
line. Thus it has a Kentucky mailing
address. Most home locations are in the
Clarksville, Tennessee area but there are also nice homes available in
Hopkinsville or Oak Grove, Kentucky. You
should leave your options open by working with a REALTOR that is licensed in
